Sample Post: The Very Busy Caterpillars (Week 25)

Hi everyone!

This week we focused on caterpillars! The kids have been fascinated by watching how much our painted lady caterpillars eat and how fast they grow. During this process, they've been learning about the life cycle of the butterfly, how to use a magnifying glass, and vocabulary such as chrysalis and metamorphosis. To further enhance our learning about caterpillars and butterflies, we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar in English and Spanish, while feeding our own giant hungry caterpillar. We enjoyed designing our own caterpillars using egg cartons. While having fun with all of those activities, we've begun exploring the unifying characteristics of insects.

Other highlights from this week include:
  • focusing on the letter W
  • creating spring nature sensory bottles
  • balloon play in the classroom
  • creating an airplane to fly to New York and Sweden
  • enjoying some apple cinnamon chamomile tea
  • learning about roly polies at the park

How big have our caterpillars grown?

Whoa! They're huge and starting to climb to the top of  the cup.

All aboard! The kids created a plane for us
to fly to New York and then to Sweden.

S instructs the other kids how to make food while we're in Sweden.

Quick selfie photo while in New York :)

The scenario card of the family sitting at the kitchen table
on their electronics brought up a lot of strong feelings
in the kids. (see at bottom of post)

Our caterpillars are turning into chrysalises!

A figured out how to use the stapler this week to create a book!

Isn't it beautiful?!

Checking out the sensory bottles we created.

Enjoying a warm cup of apple cinnamon chamomile tea after our pond trip.

S has a "cutting class" to teach the other kids how to cut paper.

If you look closely, you can start to see the wings forming!

Sample Post: Creating a Winter Wonderland (Week 13)

Hi everyone! This was a fun week of playing with and learning about dinosaurs, learning about the letter H, reviewing our sight words, and changing the decorations in our room to reflect the wintry weather. We also spent quite a bit of time working on a surprise for the parents that you'll all see when it's done :) Switching from our fall scene to snowflakes. Having the kids help with the decorating reinforces them learning about the seasonal changes, works on their fine motor skills, gives them an opportunity to practice their creativity, and gives them ownership of their classroom.  Kids will naturally make activities more challenging for themselves as they master previous skills. Having already mastered the ability to manipulate play-doh with her hands and scissors, S moves on to doing the same skills with putty, which is much tougher.  Sight word review T, P, and S built a "butterfly house" outside....
